Oh boy, she thought. I am in big trouble. There were people outside the bathroom door. She could hear them laughing and drinking. They were having a great time. They wanted her to have a great time too. They wanted her to drink the beer. She sat on the toilet and stared. It was difficult to see in the dark, windowless bathroom. She took a deep breath in and then audibly exhaled. She watched as the second line just barely appeared. She didn’t need a PCR cartridge reader to know it was there. It was hardly visible but definitely present. Well, this is not optimal she thought.
Allison, come drink. Allison where are you? Allison, Allison, Allison. She cracked the door as if opening a butterfly valve and slowly emerged from the bathroom. He was standing barefoot in the kitchen wearing olive green corduroy overalls and no shirt. He held out a beer to her his tan, tattooed arm extended. She stood there and watched as beads of condensation formed on the outside of the cold beer can. Without speaking he knew. He stared into her eyes intently. He was waiting for the boil to begin. He set the beer down on the counter and hugged her.
She knew that the days ahead would be difficult. There would be judgement, disapproval and shame cast at her. How would she grow in the midst of all of this? It was like asking yeast cells to propagate without oxygen and lacking zinc. She was no stranger to hard work and effort but she was a stranger to difficult choices. She wobbled like an unlevel fermenter, brand new and not yet settled. She took a moment, looked inside herself for strength and then found her footing.
She knew what she had to do. She imagined that a massive submicron filter would suck all of the negativity out of the air. She would live in a bubble of her own making and provide only positivity to this new growing energy. If there was no one there to help her, she would help herself. There was so much that she didn’t know but like any good scientist, she was teachable. She didn’t have all the resources presently and that’s ok she thought, she was crafty and brave.
With this decision she felt serenely calm. She was excited at the idea that life as she knew it was greater than her now. She looked to the future; certain everything would work out.
